Unicef, 80 mila lavoratori minorenni in Italia nel 2024

Mohammed, 14, a Syrian refugee from Kobani, works underneath a car at a repair shop in Erbil in the Kurdistan region of Iraq on March 10, 2016. Mohammed and his family fled violence in Kobani three years ago. He and his brother now both work full-time in an industrial area in Erbil to support their family. Mohammed and his five siblings haven't been to school since they left Syria. "What I would most like is to leave this job and go back to school. I miss my school in Syria. I miss my pens and books and I'd like to have them back." The latest MICS survey, from 2011, indicated that six per cent of children aged 5 to 14 are involved in child labour in Iraq. However, given the economic decline and increased vulnerability of Iraqi citizens since conflict erupted in 2014 - including 3.3 million internally displaced - the figure is now likely to be much higher. Iraq’s turbulent past over the last three decades has had a devastating impact on the country’s socioeconomic environment, infrastructure, and social fabric, deeply affecting the lives of ordinary Iraqi citizens. Poverty is a daily reality for around a quarter of the population. A significant proportion of the population, especially children, are highly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, including to child labour.
